History
Kohlingen is a city founded by Lord Darius Tristam after he split away from the Knights of Benwick over a disagreement on ethics and morals. For many years, the Kohlingen Defenders prospered under his name and became a righteous city, often called the “City of Paladins.” Over time, it became a major trading port and safe haven for all those of good heart.
Lord Darius Tristam eventually left the city and the Defenders leaving a priest named Kenji to lead the Defenders. Over time, they drifted away, until a Drow female named Celene Nai’lo requested that the Justicar revive them. He granted it, and the Defenders were reborn. They exist to this day. Celene Nai’lo herself eventually left the island.
When the defenders decreased in numbers again, the justicar called out for warriors of good. Raziel, a Paladin of Mystra, took command as Supreme Grand Master. During his time as leader of the defenders, the city was attacked by Ais, a powerfull fiend as well as a large army of beholders and clockwork golems. In both cases the defenders were able to hold the city with the aid of good hearted adventureres.
With the aid of dwarves from Brogenstein, the city defences were improved and the Kohlingen keep was erected as home for the justicar and defenders. The temple of the Triad's light was opened. Kohlingen became the center of the Tormite, Tyrran and Illmatari faith. For a short time, the city also housed the temple of Kelemvor. After a disagreement about the treatment of captured necromancers, the Kelemvorite temple was newly erected outside the city limits in Bendwick Hollow.
Kohlingen was the stage for one of the fiercest battles fought during the The Wyrmshadow Prophecy. The foul forces of Dark Flight of Tiamat decended upon the city with their full might. Most of Amia came to the aid of stalwart Kohlingen and united they faced the dragon led forces. Ultimately the forces of good fended off the assault. Immediately the forces of good pursued and attacked the heart of evil, Wyrmhold, itself. Due to great sacrifices of the many who opposed the Dark Flight, Wyrmhold fell. Sadly Imperator joined the dead in the ruins of Wyrmhold and it's blessed bones lies there still as an eternal testimony of the war.
Kohlingen is often referred to as the city of Paladins or the holy city.
